Chapter 6 Reflections

Artificial Intelligence sounds spooky enough. Expert systems sounds a bit better. I think we are at the scary level that people were afraid of in the 1950's. No one is too worried though.

My experience with these "Expert" programs is limited. I have never tried one that allowed me to design any part of it. For social studies I will likely never have use for such a system even though there are possibilities. The roadblock is the extensive knowledge in setup. Now, if things have worked as they have since the book was written, someone probably offers simple software that requires much less technical knowledge to run. We meet halfway with "SurveyMonkey.com" which creates surveys and allows some pretty good design features.

Using pre-designed software is easy enough. Dirigo used "Choices" for helping students look at their future of work and college. Enter the base information about courses, graduation date, gender, and a few other things and the machine would produce a list of possibilities. As you refined the data after a few questions, the program could tell you what you needed for courses or what colleges offer the curriculum you want.
